How the VS—9 works.

next

Foils

The VS—9 is lifted out of the water by actively controlled hydrofoils. High-precision flaps are automatically adjusted based on weight, wind, and waves to keep the vessel stable in a variety of conditions.

Retraction

The foils both retract or extend at the push of a button when moving at slow speeds or stopped. The front foil has two positions – out of the water or down. The rear foil has an extra position meant for shallow water operation or trailering.

Propulsion

A throttle and steering wheel control the rear foil similar to how an outboard is controlled. The system is fly-by-wire allowing for precise tuning during different modes of operation – flying or on the hulls.

Avionics

The avionics system uses a suite of sensors on the vessel to keep it stable in a variety of sea conditions. The foils are automatically adjusted to wind and waves to keep operating as simple as any other vessel.

FAQ.

01

How does charging work?

The VS–9 can charge from both standard marina AC sources as well as DC sources. 22kW 3-phase AC is available in many marinas. Mobile DC fast chargers are flexible and inexpensive to install in marinas to improve charging capability to approximately 44kW. High-speed DC chargers can also be used and are becoming more available each year. The maximum charge rate is 90kW – delivering 8 nautical miles of foiling range per 10 minutes of charging.

02

What commercial certification does the VS–9 have?

We design our systems to DNV standards. Our designs are pre-approved by Marine New Zealand-approved surveyors referencing DNV and MNZ code. The VS–9 will initially be certified by Marine New Zealand and then we will pursue additional certifications around the world.

03

How do you approach battery safety?

Safety is our priority just like yours. The battery cells on the VS—9 use a safe chemistry and are highly stable thermally. The battery modules are DNV-type approved marine batteries that have been rigorously tested for passive propagation should any cell behave unexpectedly. The cells are enclosed in an IP-rated, flame-resistant steel box, and the battery compartment is lined with structural fire protection, and fitted with fire suppression and ventilation systems. The battery compartment is designed to be fully sealed and watertight.

04

How long will the batteries last?

We use long-lasting battery technology that can be repeatedly deeply discharged with little degradation in performance. Many years and even a decade of operation can be possible, with the exact details dependent on your specific circumstances. Once a battery reaches its end of life, it can be repurposed for energy storage applications. At full end of life, its constituent materials could be recycled for new applications.

EV batteries used in applications such as the VS—9 can easily avert hundreds of times their weight in carbon emissions depending on many factors.

05

What is the hull material?

We use carbon fibre epoxy composite built to commercial standards by our experienced production team – builders of America’s Cup-winning yachts and composite orbital rockets. We use thick laminates for absolute durability. Of all the materials used for vessel building, carbon fibre has the highest overall lifespan due to its fatigue-resistant properties, representing the best lifetime value.

06

How do you handle debris?

We design for commercial applications and debris is part of our design specification. The foils are made from solid carbon fibre and will handle substantial debris. Normal debris found in harbours will not be a problem.

In the event of a grounding at foiling speed, the foils break away, keeping the hull safe. The breakpoint is designed to keep onboard accelerations low. In the rare event this occurs, the foils can be easily replaced overnight, similar to an outboard.

07

How easy is it to helm? Are any certifications required?

The VS–9 has a steering wheel and a throttle similar to those of other vessels of its size. It works like a planing powerboat and is very easy to helm. An optional bow thruster provides additional manoeuvrability but is seldom required.

The onboard computer and sensor suite take care of all flight details. How high you fly above the water is set by the ride height, which you can adjust for different conditions.

For commercial applications in New Zealand, no specific endorsements are required to drive the VS–9 other than a SRL (Skipper’s Restricted Limits) – the same as for other powerboats. Operators may choose to have their own specific instructions for skippers. Regulations in different countries may vary, but overall, there is very little difference between operating a VS–9 and a standard powerboat.

Recreational requirements will depend on local jurisdiction and will likely be the same as for any other powerboat. We are not aware of any specific licence anywhere in the world associated with hydrofoiling for recreational purposes.

08

How is the seakeeping performance?

Seakeeping is best in class. We use ultra-high-authority foil systems and advanced control algorithms to create the best boating experience possible, even in adverse conditions. Up to 0.75m waves are fine. When waves are over 0.75m, some wave clipping may occur. In sea states where foiling is not possible, the VS–9 will perform as well as, if not better than, conventional vessels. The foils add very significant stabilisation even when travelling below foiling speeds.

09

Will you offer recreational variants?

Yes, we have already sold the first recreational vessels. Please contact us for details.

10

How can you offer a 20-year warranty?

Our mission is to break down barriers to sustainable commercial boating. We view every vessel as a partnership for the life of that vessel. As such, we provide service partnerships. The partnership is simple: qualified commercial operators pay a monthly fee based on usage, and we provide replacement components for EV, battery, propulsion, foil, actuation and control systems. Additionally, we provide technician support to train others on the installation of our components as well as software upgrades.

If we can’t deliver parts, components, or knowledge in a reasonable time period, operators do not owe us the fee. We feel that this arrangement provides great incentives for all involved.

Occasionally we may upgrade systems on vessels to improve performance. As a result, we warranty our products in commercial applications for 20 years and can provide spare components quickly.

The cost is based on usage and application. Less usage results in a lower cost. The cost of the service partnerships will vary depending on location and fleet composition, but may not be substantially different than the ongoing costs of fossil fuel engines.

11

Can the VS—9 be towed on roads?

Yes, the VS–9 is towable where local policy permits. Being a towable commercial electric vessel is a big part of what makes the VS–9 so accessible. It can be stored out of the water in off-seasons and relaunched without a boatyard’s involvement. The VS–9 is 3.1m on the beam and 3100kg, requiring a larger towing vehicle and trailer. Please check your local laws.

12

Can the VS—9 be shipped?

Yes! The VS—9 can be cost-effectively transported on Ro-Ro (roll on, roll off) ships to any port in the world where Ro-Ro ships visit. It would be transported on a trailer, which can be purchased with the vessel.

13

Where can I demo? When can I get one?

Demos are currently in New Zealand, but we will have global opportunities available. Please contact us to arrange a demonstration.

The next deliveries are expected in 2025. If you would like to hold your spot, the first step is to make a US$3K (refundable) build slot reservation.
